Professional surveys completed and first conservation works carried out with €100,000 Community Monuments Fund support.
Thanks to successful grant applications to the National Monuments Service, and generous voluntary contributions funding was secured for a professional archaeological survey and assessment of Killoo Church and its grounds. This important work included:
- LIDAR imaging to map the site with exceptional detail.
- Aerial photography to provide a clear record of the church and surrounding landscape.
- Historical research to help us better understand the heritage and significance of Killoo.
The survey work was completed in July 2024 and provided the essential groundwork for conservation.
Securing further funding was the next milestone. With generous contributions from local residents, friends of Killoo, and the allocation of €100,000 under the Department of Heritage and Local Government’s Community Monuments Fund, we were able to begin the urgent physical works.
A contractor specialising in the conservation of ancient structures was engaged to carry out intensive conservation work on the Church ruin and surrounding walls. This required extensive removal of vegetation that had accumulated over the centuries. This phase was carried out to the highest standards in accordance with the Deaton evaluation report and reached successful completion in late October 2024, marking a turning point in the restoration journey.
